The course focused as much on developing real-world skills as it did on teaching specific course material, and so rather than more traditional academic papers, Professor Wichowski’s assignments include a briefing document and an original op-ed. It was the latter assignment, which I began in March, that brought my words to The Late Show with  Stephen Colbert on May 3. While conducting research for my capstone project ­â€" an analysis of Russian active measures on Twitter targeting Americans with content about the Syrian conflict â€" our team came across a study on Russian trolls’ participation in the online vaccine debate, which I used as a foundation for Professor Wichowski’s assignment. She told us at the beginning of the semester that the op-ed assignment usually resulted in at least one student’s work being published, but at the time it seemed a hypothetical prospect. Luckily for me, Professor Wichowski had other ideas, and encouraged me to submit the piece for publication. I took her advice, and shopped the op-ed to a handful of outlets before it landed at Foreign Policy. With the help of their fantastic editing team, I refined and expanded the piece, which appeared on the Foreign Policy website at the beginning of April. I was thrilled with the article’s initial reception and grateful that it drew much-needed attention to Russia’s less overtly political information warfare operations. Little did I know that, when The Late Show with Stephen Colbert began work on a segment about Russian trolls and the online vaccine debate, my article would be one of their primary sources, which Colbert quoted when the segment went live on May 3. Whatever I expected from my time at SIPA, it certainly did not include a shout-out on late night television. Writing and publishing my first opinion piece was one of the most impactful experiences of my SIPA career. After the United States bombed Japan in World War Two, Korea was divided into two countries: North and South Korea. The economy in each country had different outcomes, which prevented and complicated these two countries coming back together. The US and five other countries, including North and South Korea, were involved in the Six Party Talks to try to combine the two conflicting countries. Although the United States has participated in talks with North Korea before, the US should engage in talks with them because they need to make a decision that will affect the country by preventing starvation or saving their nuclear weapons program. As stated in the New York Times, â€Å"Almost one out of two children is chronically malnourished†¦ North Korea runs a shortage of one million tons of food a year† (Sang-Hun). The United States should engage in talks with North Korea because their people are the ones suffering due to lack of nutrition. The government should understand that the future of North Korea wouldn’t look too bright with a smaller population and residents that are more angered than today. Also, since this country is under a dictatorship, the people have no input on topics, such as this one, that can help the bulk of their people. If the government were to continue to go against the people, an uprising should be expected and to other countries this wouldn’t come as a shock. With the help of the United States, the US can compromise with the North Korean government and supply aid for the deprived people. Not only is it in the best interest for the North Koreans, but for their government to negotiate to keep themselves in power. Another worry for the United States is North Korea has possession of nuclear weapons. As stated in the New York Times, â€Å"Since six-party talks ended, North Korea has detonated a nuclear device and tested a long-range rocket that may one day be able to carry nuclear warheads â€Å" (Knowlton and Sang-Hun). With having this as a â€Å"safety† or backup, Kim Jung IL is believed to have sold nuclear parts to Iran and Syria. What’s even worse is North Korea has the choice to sell their nuclear materials to Al Qaeda. The United States is concerned that if Al Qaeda were to possess these materials, they could create nuclear weapons and use this to hurt other countries, such as the US and Israel. Al Qaeda has no guilt for hurting large masses of people, so firing these VERY dangerous weapons, and killing people, wouldn’t be on their conscious. If the United States were to engage in talks with North Korea, they could compromise on dismantling their nuclear weapons, and could prevent nuclear materials from getting into the wrong hands. In conclusion, the United States would be making the right decision to engage in talks with North Korea for the sake of their starving people and from keeping nuclear materials out of the hands of Al Qaeda. This would help secure our safety and could potentially give the United States another ally in Asia. City, Kendrick Lamar has catapulted himself back into the spotlight with a catchy tune that promotes self-love, after a prolonged period of flying noticeably below the radar. Albeit, he has undoubtedly satisfied his fans with numerous guest verses within that time (who could forget his infamous name-calling rambling on Big Sean’s â€Å"Control† or his two-minute wordplay-filled rant during TDE’s BET Hip-Hop Awards Cypher or his speedy nonchalant flow over Flying Lotus’ futuristic production on â€Å"Never Catch Me†). However, hip-hop heads across the globe have been yearning for a new single from the Compton based emcee and self-proclaimed â€Å"King of New York†. They received just that when â€Å"i† was released, but it was not what a majority of them were expecting. In the first few lines of the song, Kendrick raps, â€Å"I have been through a whole lot/Trials, tribulations but I know God/Satan wanna put me in a bowtie/Pray that the holy water don’t go dry, yay yay!† This leads up to the recurring head-bobbing hook â€Å"I love myself!†, Kendrick affirming in between that he is negligent to the problems of the world and that he has an optimistic output on life despite troubles that h e may encounter. Many so-called â€Å"music enthusiasts† have been disappointed and even outraged with the track. They believe that the song is an adulterating change of tone from Kendrick’s previous works that have captured his listeners’ hearts. However, â€Å"i† shouldn’t be regarded as anything but a positive sign for the album to come. In a radio industry currently dominated by the â€Å"New Atlanta† wave and one-hit wonders, â€Å"i† is quite literally a positive step for mainstream hip-hop. Why not have a motivational suicide prevention anthem blasting through your speakers while you’re crusing down the road? Kendrick has admitted that he made this song for his â€Å"homies in the cell that feel like they have nothing to live for† and the â€Å"kids at shows with slash marks on their arms†. Why bash sanguinity? â€Å"i†, if had to be compared to anything, would be closely similar to a track Andre 3000 would have produced in the early 2000’s. In fact, hip-hop has not heard anything of this nature sonically (mainstream, at least) since OutKast. Evolution is key for any artist, and I am quite intrigued to see if Kendrick’s upcoming album will keep up the level of experimentation that is displayed onâ€Å"i†. Until then, every time â€Å"i† comes on the radio, I will find myself inexplicably screaming â€Å"I love myself!† along with Lamar.
